Welcome to Year 4
Mr Ellis and Mrs Khan look forward to working with you this year to achieve our Mission Statement through working hard, having fun and making the most of every learning opportunity. Please look on our Long Term Plan for a breakdown of what we will study each term.
Our school aim this year is to improve reading through increasing our vocabulary and understanding. It is important that every child reads their reading book regularly and also chooses other books and ways to read on a regular basis. Our library is open most days after school for children to borrow books and find a love of reading, favourite author or genre. Every book your child reads in addition to their reading book earns them a point towards their Bronze, Silver or Gold Reading Champion Certificate. You can help your child by listening to them read, asking questions about what they have read and visiting the library with them.
We will study a wide variety of genres over the year including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Looking at the vocabulary, structure , grammar and punctuation used in each text we read will help us to write our own versions of them and be successful writers. In class we have a Grammar Vine where we collect examples of grammar to help us remember what we learn and to help us steal good vocabulary, each class has a word wall where children enjoy displaying new words and their meanings. For spellings we are following ‘No Nonsense Spellings’ which ensures that the children learn the key words and graphemes for Lower Key Stage 2. Please encourage your child to learn their weekly spellings.
This year we will be using Power Maths to practise our mastery in all areas of Maths, embedding problem solving and reasoning throughout our learning. We will use a variety of equipment, models and images to help us to master a range of skills.
It was announced in 2018 by the Department of Education that a times table online/on screen digital assessment would be introduced to Year 4 which will take place in June 2022. According to the national curriculum, by the end of Year 4, all children should ‘be taught to recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12.’
You will be taught times tables in class but it is crucial that you practise at home. We have now introduced Times Table Rockstars so please use it daily, in school and at home.
We will be learning about Christianity, and other faiths, alongside the work we undertake on using Values (Service, Love, Thankfulness and Belonging) in our daily lives. Each child belongs to a Value Team and works hard with their value ambassadors to promote their value throughout the school.
Through developing our investigative and practical skills we will have lots of fun learning scientific concepts in the areas of Electricity, Sound, Teeth, Digestive System, States of Matter and Habitats.
P.E. is every Wednesday including indoor and outdoor sports – please make sure your child has their PE kit in school. Please see our Long Term Plan for the topics we will cover in each subject this year. Throughout all of our learning the children will have access to a range of technologies for researching, presenting and communicating information they find.
We expect all our Year 4 children to work hard and have fun in their learning to be the best that they can be! The children’s rewards and sanctions can be found on Progresso. If you have any concerns or questions regarding your child’s progress or wellbeing please get in touch. We will regularly be on the playground at the end of the day.
