We are delighted to welcome our new children and their families into our school family. Starting school is an important milestone and we truly believe that teaching Reception has to be one of the best jobs in the world! It is wonderful to see our young children make so much progress as they develop during their time in Reception and we aim to make their first learning experiences in school as enjoyable and as memorable as we can.

The Early Years curriculum is called the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. It sets out seven areas of learning and development.

The prime areas of learning are:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

The specific areas of learning are:

  1. Literacy
  2. Mathematics
  3. Understanding the world
  4. Expressive arts and design

These seven areas are used to plan your child’s learning activities.

At the end of the EYFS – in the summer term of the Reception year in school – teachers complete an assessment which is known as the EYFS Profile. This assessment is carried out by the Reception teachers and is based on what they, and other staff caring for your child, have observed over a period of time.

In Reception we are active learners who love to play, explore and demonstrate our ability to create and think critically. We plan learning opportunities based on children’s interests which ensures that children enjoy their learning.

Our typical day would begin with early morning activities to practise our small motor skills. This is followed by Read Write Inc. In this time we learn to read and write sounds and words. This is a very fun and engaging approach to teaching and learning phonics.  Our Maths activities follow the curriculum from the Power Maths Program used by the rest of the school. These are supported by activities from the NCETM & White Rose. Throughout the day we provide opportunities for children to explore the classroom, outdoors and take part in activities linked to other areas of development such as Expressive Arts and Design and Understanding the World. We also take part in PE, Music and RE lessons each week.
